Just finished Darksiders

Just finished Darksiders [Playstation 3]

After about 2 weeks of playing Darksiders I just finished it. I literally finished it less than a minute ago. I absolutely can’t hold it in anymore. This is probably the best game I have every played. Lack of online aside it’s a masterpiece. From the very beginning I thought the game was gorgeous and easily playable.

The story is very dramatic and also very well thought out. The whole angels and demons story is a tired and one that has been beaten to death time and again, but never told in this way. Angel and Demon alike respect the rules that govern the war between them, mostly because there is a greater power that makes the rules and an even greater power that make them. War is just a poor little pawn that has a reputation for being a loose cannon. Somehow the apocalypse gets set off and the whole universe starts pointing fingers at him. So they all take his powers and give him a chance to clear his name. As the story progresses further you learn of a deceptive tale that gets increasingly dramatic and you start to root for War more and evermore until the ultimate end.

This game is not all button mashing action adventure like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden. The basis is action adventure but they mesh in some other gameplay dynamics like Third Person shooter, puzzle solving, vehicular combat, environment weapon interaction. There is a little bit taken from all genres to mix things up and not make it seems like it’s tedious.

You get 3 weapon types that you can combo together and there are range weapon types that you can add into combat to mix things up and either make it more flavorful or just easier. There is this throwing star that you can throw and will grind into enemies while you unleash devastating combos, or a grappling chain that can grab onto all enemy types and either pull you to them or them to you which is also nice for nifty combos.

You get a chance to pick up various different weapon types like angelic plasma cannons and demonic shard cannons. All are nice to play with and do devastating damage. You usually encounter these during battles that you couldn’t win with just a sword. Imagine waves of 10-20 enemies at once and some of them are minibosses.

Ruin is War’s horse and when you play with him it feels like Red Dead Revolver. You can shoot enemies while riding with your pistol or you can sweep by them in waves with your sword. There IS a boss fight that involves using Ruin and your pistol..

I like that you can grab things from the environment and use them as weapons.. Kinda like Incredible Hulk Ultimate destruction. You can either grapple cars or just pick them up and throw them and you can use them as melee weapons as well. Same goes for fireheidrants, lampposts, benches, desks, mailboxes, buses, etc…

Altogether, it’s a beautiful and very fun game. You will get your money’s worth. 10/10
